I did this very thing the other day (could have sworn I had a spare tub of Swarfega) and was reminded of how we used to clean our grimy hands in the days when we couldn't afford fancy hand cleaner.
Butter and sugar - rubbed well in and washed off - works a treat.
Marg. works too.

thanks for the tip as there never seems to be hand cleaner available here.  I use paint thinner or whatever solvent like it that comes to hand.  I'll try the butter and sugar.

And if your watching your cholesterol try cooking oil. Works good too.

Halifax?? That's somewhere out west isn't it?
No, I'm born and bred in the fair county of the East Riding of Yorkshire. (near Beverley)

Would have thought butter&sugar was the rich man's hand cleaner! Perhaps a little Grey Poupon mixed in :D

Just a palm full of motor oil cleans the grease away. Hands are just as greasy as with butter.

I keep Simple Green on hand for general cleanup. If I run out of the hand cleaner, I just squirt some on my hands. It does the job great... but a little rough on the skin..

My hands were never  more lovley and soft than after an automatic transmission job.

Auto fluid is realy good and even gets under the finger nails.

The girl friend said my hands were soft on her inner thigh and did'nt pull the nylons.

I always keep a gallon of old stuff handy in the back seat.

The bench grinder is handy for keeping the finger nails down too.

The girl friend said my hands were soft on her inner thigh and didn't pull the nylons.

Then she realised you still had the rubber gloves on eh?  ;D

You obviously from the South, Lotus.

Up North we don't use rubber gloves for such a delicate operation as inner thigh exploration.

Thats why all the Southern birds from Birmingham come up North for their holidays.

I'm a Brit too ( though now in Canada ),( and a southerner I may add) and I remember as a kid at home my Dad used to use Kitchen washing up liquid and sugar...get a good lather up, then rinse under hot water in the kitchen sink....cheaper than the swarfega! I still use the same method today...works a treat!

Well if we are starting a house hold tips thread. I can recommend dog shit for chapped lips. In cold weather when your lips get sore rub a bit of dog shit on them ,--it wont cure it but it stops you licking your lips.

Old old joke, Clamp. I'm disappointed, but have nothing better to add.  ;)
