Hey guys need some basic advice as I like to have some knowlege before I rip shit apart.
Need to change me speedo, old one got smashed by something (Hail I think, bad storms) Luckly a friend GAVE me a smiths style speedo to plop in.
Is it just a simple pry old one off gently, disconnect speedo cable and wiring and reassemble?

Also for the warning lights he said he left them connected inside the cluster out of sight and looked for the reflection off the tank front! (Chrome) Seems ideal to keep warning lights but just subtly.

Okaayyy somehow Ive lost all power to my bike while doing this...

I think I blew the main fuse.
But I cant find it, there is provisions for one in the LH toolbox but none.
Couldnt see one under the seat or behind battery box.

I installed one of the smith replicas and recall having to modify the speedo bracket notch to clear the speedo cable as it screws into the speedo. Otherwise the bracket won't clear portions of the underside of the casquette....the speedo will be rotated off center. At least mine was.

Found the fuse, it was in some odd spring loaded twisty, I instsllrd the speedo but i think the globe is blown. To give me park and headlights I bypassed the globe but now I have no park therefore headlights (I think)
I didnt disturb any other wiring.

So I need help, when I turn lights on the amp meter slams into the negatives.

That means a wire is crossed some where or the part you installed is not plug N play

in other words, you've got a "hot" wire
going directly to ground.

So a wire that runs straight into its ground is a bad thing?
Thats what I did so the new speedo backlight could be taken out of the circuit..

Any time electricity goes directly from the power source (battery or alternator), directly to ground without going thru something and powering it, that is a bad thing.

If the power goes thru a light bulb, ignition coil, ECU, guage or similar thing to make it operate, that is OK.

Ahh I see
I took the bulb part of the speedo out and it appears I have a shitty bulb, it fell into two parts.
Ill put a new bulb and see what happens.
Shame Ive only got time tomorrow night to do this, want her running 100% by the weekend!
