Would someone tell me how to remove the tank on my GT?  I think the process was described here before the infestation but I didn't preserve it.  Thanks in advance!

Pull off the side cover and seat. Undo the two bolts at back of the tank . Lift the back, unclip the fuel line from the pump. Unclip the fuel pump wire connector and the fuel gauge sender wire ( small black joiner toward the front ). Slide the tank back off the front rubber mounts and lift it off.

I guess I ought to have asked how to get the seat off.  I tug back and forth on it pretty firmly but all it does is flex, and I'm afraid of cracking it.

Just remove the left side cover and you will see a cable with a loop on it.  Pull the cable to release the seat.

I think during the winter time Im going to remove the tank and paint everything that's red black or flat black. Flat black tank with gloss black RE logo sounds sweet to me..

I knew I had the right answer to that one Uncle Billy!  When you get your tank off have a good look around for signs of the tank rubbing on the wiring.  My tank was vibrating on the wiring and shorted out a purple wire that went to the fuel injector.  Bike was running really weird when that happened.  Hitchcocks actually sells nylon washers to use as spacers to raise the back of the tank a bit.  I guess they noticed it too.  I'm going to the hardware store for some.

I'm about 150 miles south of Portland.  :)

In areas where the wiring harness is near sharp metal corners or parts are rubbing against it you might want to do what I did to my G5 when I first got it.

Buy a few feet of clear vinyl tubing in 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8" size.  It's cheap.

In areas where the wiring or harness is in danger, cut a length of the tubing that will be long enough to protect the wires.
Use a razor knife to slit the cut piece of tubing down the side from end to end.

Pry the cut open and slip the wiring inside the tube.

The vinyl is soft so it won't damage the insulation on the wires, causing trouble later.

Push the back of the seat down while you're pulling the cable ,too. Mine jams if I don't and I think if I pull too hard and the cable snaps,I'm screwed.

Thanks to all who have written here!  Seems to me this sort of info ought to be in the owner's manual.  And when are we going to get a repair manual like the Haynes and Chilton manuals I have for all my cars?  Better yet, a factory-produced shop manual?

Continental:  The reason I ased about Portland is because I'll be there 8 to 15 July visiting family (and See See coffee and bikes too, and any other cafe-oriented shop there).  Portland is reputed to be a hotbed of cafe style activities, at least in western NY.
