Author Topic: I'm OCD, what do I need for fall, early winter riding?  (Read 2001 times)

Carb wise I mean....  I know I always had to rejet my carb in the ATV for winter.  Anyhow, 07 Military ALL stock intake and exhaust wise.  Electronic ignition and not much else.  I've put 1000 miles on since Fathers day when I got it.  I'm planning on riding well into the fall when temps drop into the 40's at night.  I ask this question because I notice a HUGE difference in performance.  When I ride into work at 2pm temps are around 90 and when I ride home at night temps are in the 60's.  I can hit 65 and the motor sounds perfectly happy on the ride in.  On the ride home I hear the motor start chugging at 60 so I don't push it.  I don't think I am lean because I have yet to use the choke and it starts on the second kick every time (I haven't use the electric start at all, OK once I stalled in the intersection and used it but other than that I've never used it).  Suggestions for cooler weather riding?  What should I buy in advance to get ready?

My '02 definitely pulls harder with cooler air, but I have noticed that with cars too.

It makes sense, cooler air is denser air, so more power. I think we just notice it more on the Enfield because they produce such modest power to begin with that even 1 hp is a substantial gain.

Otherwise, once the weather gets consistently in the 40's I would switch to a lighter weight oil, say 10-40 rather than 20-50.

I never need the choke until the weather is below 50 and even then only for a couple blocks.

Wet naps?
2005E Fixed and or Replaced: ignition, fenders,chainguard,wires,carb,headlight,seat,tailight,sprockets,chain,shock springs,fork springs, exhaust system, horn,shifter,clutch arm, trafficators,crankcase vent.

Just needed to know if I should expect having to rejet the carb for winter.  My Polaris MV700 runs terrible but I run that in sub zero temps. I'm not planning on riding the bike that late in the season!

I ride my military all year around in nc. temps into the low teens and no need to re-jet, just let it warm up a bit before taking off.
