It's my understanding that their purpose is to reduce/eliminate the ringing sound coming from the vibration of the cylinder cooling fins.

In my case 1 or 2 are starting to fall off..how can I reattach them?I have seen many RE just don't have these rubber pads...no idea did they really fall or the owners took them off for a better air flow or cooling.

Use some hi-temp automotive silicone sealer as an adhesive, and allow the full 24 hours to cure.

You may not see many older Iron Enfields with them as the Iron cylinder and fins dampened any ringing, an alloy cylinder and fins tend to ring with the vibration, hence the rubbers, replacements are cheap and as ace said, a hi-temp sealant with a good cure time.

I removed those the first day I owned the bike.  I just don't like the look of them there.  I found a good use for them though; I stick them between the heat shield and the muffler near the forward section to keep that stupid heat shield from vibrating against the muffler at certain RPMs.

They're high temp resistant, so they don't melt, but they eventually vibrate out.  I've still got a good bunch of them left though.

Cheers,

Dan K.

I didn't like the rubber dampers from the word "go".
The dampers are there to dampen out harmonic vibration.

Living in Phoenix where the summer temperatures can easily be higher than 107*F (42*C) I decided the extra cooling fin area that the dampers covered would be more effective if they weren't covered so I removed the dampers.
After 3 years of riding over 14,700 miles the fins have shown no signs of distress so I'm a happy rider. :)

One thing is for sure, those dampers don't do anything helpful for the vintage image of the bike.

The only thing that I noticed was that they dampened the appearance. Some were falling out anyway so off they came.  Looks better, sounds great.

I removed just the ones from the head, which are more visible on top of the gray paint - and left the ones on the black-painted barrel, which blend in pretty well.  It made no difference to the sound that I could discern...

What you do with them is your business but that was a bit too much information. I'll bet mom said you would go blind, not deaf.

I was always told blindness would be the result.

Maybe it effects women differently?
