This is a strange one so I hope someone can help.  My 2006 Bullet 500 idles fine in neutral, lets me blip the throttle and doesn't need much choke to run when cold.   Once I sit on the bike and shift to first, it keeps idleing fine, but when I give it throttle, it dies.  If I keep trying and let off the throttle everytime the RPM drops, it gradually gets better and lets me ride without stalling.  Sometimes it backfires through the carb.  Can't figure out why it works in neutral but no in gear.  I adjusted the clutch so it definitely is not dragging.  Rebuilt the carb twice.  I do see some gas dripping from the bowl after I ride so maybe the float is wrong.  I was thinking also timing.
Help.  I don't want to start tweaking everything.

Definitely check the float level. It sounds like it may be too high.
