Now that sounds like a fun trip, I look forward seeing your journal.  Once you get your route firmed up I'm sure there will be many offers of help from forum members.

If you indeed do go through Houston, you'll be coming through San Antonio on I-10. I'm about 38 miles north in New Braunfels, TX. Need anything or just want to visit. Get in touch. Wouldn't hurt taking all the info from the offers that surely will come. You never know!
Retiree also, so chances are I'll be around.

Sounds like you could have a MC escort most of the way. Sounds fun!

San Diego to  Phoenix in August eh?
I did the run between LA and Phoenix in August once.
It was 109 degrees at 9 AM when I left Palm Springs and got up to 119 degrees by the time I got to Phoenix.
Little pink skinned Michigan boy burnt right up out there. I think it was the most hostile environment I ever rode through not so much for me but it killed the air cooled bike (HD) I was on. I had a 2.2 gal gas tank so I needed to ride it during the day as there was no gas stations open at night. I was running 3 qts of 70w oil and 2 cans of STP and the oil was still like water.
Oil had burnt on the valve stems and later when I got up into the Mountains of Colorado it went clank clank and that was it.
Did learn a few tricks down there though. Get your clothes soaking wet and put your rain suit on so the water won't evaporate so fast to stay cool.
Don't put an extra gal of gas in a Prestone bottle and bungee it to the sissy bar because it will get to about the size of a basketball. When I saw it I took it off and offered it to a family of migrant workers in a station wagon but they didn't want it because it was Premium and their car ran on Regular so I went behind the rest area and poured it out on the ground. 1 whole gallon and it never got the ground wet.
Take lots of sun screen, my lips and nose looked like the dried up mud that was everywhere. Dry and cracked.
Every uphill grade had a steaming car off on the side of it.
The locals just laugh at ya while your dancing on the griddle!
Yup, too fricken hot for me that time of the year.
My 2 cents, avoid the Mohave like the plague during the summer months!
Aside from that enjoy your trip, wish I was going with ya.

Dammit. Must be nice to be retired.

My dream was NJ to Alaska on two wheels. Don't know if I'll ever be able to do it.

Oh well, enjoy!  ;)

I just saw a Motorcycle News video on Youtube about an Enfield Bullet tour of India. Maybe Enfield USA could organize one from NYC to LA or the other way round? It would be a nice way to get word out next summer when the new UCE bikes are out. I'm going to buy one and would be happy to join if this is arranged.

I think you are grandfathered in for a month or so, but if stay longer you have to get one in the state you reside in.  Some states are easy,  in Florida you have to take a 2 day class with a written and driving test.

How about Seattle or San Fransico instead,  LA kinda sucks.

I'm with ya on that one, stay to the Northern side of things. Highway 2 is a good RE type road. Boston to Seattle just under the Canadian border. They chopped it up between Buffalo and St. Ignace but the rest is awesome. Only a 2 or 3 week window for motorcycles going through the Rocky's though.

I don't know what Granfathered in means ? in regard to the license.

As far as a trip accross Us or the like I would be interested. I would probably buy one and sell it afterwards. Perhaps a deal with the sponsor to supply me one and a negotiate a  resale price subject to condition on return,--whatever.

The first 500 mile might be a bit rough as far as buying one new would be concerned.

This is what they say about it in Florida.

International Drivers

Florida honors a valid foreign driver's license with an international driving permit. Once your foreign license expires, you must apply for an FL learners permit and pass all required testing to receive a driver's license. (Some exceptions apply for Canada, France, Germany and Taiwan. See the Florida Driver Manual for details.)

So I imagine Canada , Germany et al are grandfathered in.
