because I have an artificial right leg, I first adj the brake at the back by the drum and found the foot brake lever collided with the exhaust..so I adjusted the nut, I think You speak of, so as the brake pedal was under the toe, but I wasn't riding it, as to the brake light being constantly on or the brake shoes making contact..and I could catch it with my heel when needed.. I mostly use the front brake except in wet conditions...and then I adjusted the rear again and also the brake light switch
I just messed with it until I found what was right for me, also , I haven't noticed any problem with the return spring.
