I'd say yes if it meets JASO MA, MA1 or MA2 specs.
It also should say it is designed for use in motorcycles because most (if not all) motorcycle oil has additives to provide the extra lube needed by the gears in the transmission.

Personally, I use Mobil-1 V-Twin but it is a 20w-50 weight oil.  The heavier oil works ok here in Phoenix where the temperature is rarely below 40*F but if it was cooler here I would be looking for the 15w-50 recommended by RE.

The 'designed for motorcycles' is less important with a 15w-50 oil.  Since it's not a common weight used in cars it doesn't have to meet the newer restrictions on common car weight oils: 5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40, etc.  These heavier weights tend to not have the friction modifiers and lower levels of zinc and sulfur compounds that can be problematic for motos.

Wikipedia actually has an useful description of oil specification.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_oil
People will tell you they use all kinds of stuff.  If you have a wet clutch, you should use an oil designed for wet clutches.  Car gasoline or diesel oils may work, but then, it's purely shotgun luck as they aren't designed for wet clutches.  That is the primary concern.  Not whether it's used in the trans or air cooled, but wet clutches.
If you're worried about the weight range, your owner's manual has a chart that recommends what weights to use in what ambient temp range of your local weather.
