I saw the same 'difference of opinions'. Cant say what is right or wrong, but what i've settle with is setting the adjuster to about 1/8 to 1/4 turn out. Then I tighten up the cable as 'tight as i dare'. Generally i have 2 to 3 mm of play at the handle lever.
Sometimes in heavy stop and go traffic, my clutch gets hot making it difficult to find neutral; I'll use the barrel adjuster to make minor changes on the fly, try to stay off the clutch and then back it off later on. This works well for me and my commuting riding conditions.
