So, 292 mile oil change. My bike has the extra drain plug (12mm bolt at front of engine pan) along with the 19mm standard plug and the 2 8mm basket drain. Measured 2 quarts plus about 6 oz old oil taken out. Replace with 1 qt 23oz and oil window was at just above half. Using Mobile 1 20/50. Started bike and window went empty. Dumb question; should I keep filling till the window oil comes back up? Stick in what I took out? Just looking for a second opinion.

Dumped in the last of the second quart. Oil window just below half. Looks like I need another quart. That extra drain plug makes a big difference.

Appearently you are right.
IMO, "just below half" is just about perfect.
If you decide to add a bit more oil, it won't take much to bring the level up to the top of the sight guage and having it down to the half way point allows you to see that it isn't overfilled.

Did you get a lot of chips and metal filings out of the oil pickup screen and the two magnets?
I got some sort of cloth fiber like things off of my pickup screen when I did my first change.  Did you?

Have a good one! :)

No big nasties in the screen. Pretty much dark gray metal shaving gunk. The oil itself was still mostly yellowish. It was a bit darker from the front drain. Gotta go crank it over and check the level again to see where I'm at. Just kinda panicked when it all disappeared from the window, but I figured it must have dispersed into all the UCE chambers.

I did my first oil change today too (300 miles one), and your post got me thinking.  Firstly, why does your C5 have one more drain plug than my C5?  Is that something new on the 2013 model?  Mine is a 2012.

Next, when I bought my C5 last week, the dealer cautioned me not to put 2.75 liters of oil into it when I did the oil change.  He told me 1.75 liters.  You drained more than 2 quarts out of yours?  And put just about 1.7 liters back into it.  Does the motor really hold 2.75 liters, but its impossible to drain it all out at once?  Are we adding new oil that mixes in with old when we do an oil change?

This is pretty confusing. . .

Cheers,

Dan K.

Your dealer is right.  The 2.75 liters is WAY to much oil.

I think RE added the third drain plug to the underside of the crankcase (ahead of the oil sump) to drain out the oil that collects in that area sometime in late 2012.

If your engine doesn't have this third plug and with the two drain plugs removed, tip the bike to the right and left to get as much oil out of the sidecovers as possible.  Then return it to the center stand.
When you refill you will find that somewhere between 1.75 and 2 quarts will bring the oil level up to the center of the sight guage.

This is probably my least favorite aspect of my 2010 G5 Deluxe. I have complained at length about it elsewhere. I would definitely prefer a DIPSTICK I could check before every ride, as I am never certain what oil level will appear in the window. I vented my crankcase to the rear of the bike (capped off opening in Airbox) Now if I overfill-it blows it out the hose to the rear of the bike.
ALSO CHANGE THE NASTY FORK OIL. I use Amsoil ATF, as recommended in Pete Snydals manual.
Best Wishes, Craig McClure

I'm just a novice, so I need to be spoon-fed on some of this.  Some of the above individual posts mix both "quarts" and "liters" when describing the proper quantity of oil.  I can do the conversion when just one of the measurements is used, however I get confused when both are used within the same post.

In "quarts", how much oil is required for a proper oil change?

After tipping my G5 to the left and right and replacing the drain plug and the pump inlet screen cover it takes just under 2 quarts of oil to refill it.

I won't mention how many liters that is. :)

Sorry it took so long to get back. Had honey do's last night and been out in the forest getting firewood today. Latest;, after the complete second quart last night the glass showed between half and empty. Started up, shut down, still at same place. Just now (this evening) started on the third quart. Added just over 10 ounces. Window at half. Started up/shut down. Window at an "RCH" over half. According to a convenient oz converter on line that is 2.2 liters.  When I mentioned in my first post 2 quarts 6 oz (that I took out) that was a messy measure and oil flowed out the top of the plastic oil jug I was measuring with when I squeezed it. At any rate, just a hair over half after start and sit.
FYI I did the rock thing 4 times each way before opening up the front drain. That also was rocked and more came out. Had all three open and all three stopped draining after rocking.
Haven't run it down the road yet, but will update when I do. Raining right now, will do tomorrow.

I'm beginning to think one of the problems with a visual sight guage like RE uses is some of the owners get to be boarding on paranoia.

If the oil level in the window is anywhere between the top and the bottom, the engine will be happy.  It does not have to be exactly in the middle. :)

Hey Kearney, Not sure about drain #3 just stumbled upon it after reading there might be one on the forum. The copper washer was the dead give away. Also, I have a Kearney in the family tree 3 generations ago back in the mother-land. Maybe REs are in the blood!! Cheers!
