Hello all,

I'm looking for a knobbly 19 inch tyre for my RE woodsman.

It's currently using 19 90/90 tyres on the front, and 19 100/90s on the back. Are there any tyres of this size, or close to this size that would do the job?

Straight knobby or knobby/street?  The Dunlop K70 is available in 19" sizes.   It's chunky enough for most off road but good on the street too.

Hi N.M.,

Pirelli MT 21 rally cross, IRC TR8, kenda K270, Dunlop K70 and a few more get the Bill Harris stamp of approval.
He is a better rider on his worst day than I ever was on my best.

The Dunlop K70's on my military are quieter on pavement than the Kenda 270's on our Trials bike and give up little to the Kendas off road.

The Kendas do better for me in the mud than the Dunlops and they do surprisingly well on pavement.
No matter where you go, there, you are.

I'm running Shinko 241's on my G5. So far so good, they feel great on the street and stable on loose dirt. No complaints and the price is right.

I was just going to recommend the Shinko 241s.  A real good DOT off road tire with a real affordable price.

Hope this isn't a hijack.  Also looking for knobby/dual-sport tires for my C5 Classic.  My rear is 110/80 18 though.  Having some trouble finding matched pairs that come in this size and 90/90 19 for the front.

The Kenda 761's look good for my purposes, but the closest 19" size they have is 100/90 19.  Anyone running a slightly fatter front tire?

I'm running the Shinko 705s on both my bikes and I love them!  Really great traction on and off the road and superb traction on wet asphalt.  Like all Shinko tires, very affordable.  I got front and rear tires, tubes and rim strips from a local shop for $140.

          Ice,

Just curious - did you find a designated front & a designated rear 3.50x19 or did you use a front reversed on the rear?

No.  Everyone running K70s is running a front tire on the rear in reverse direction.

Are the K-70 3.50x19s you find online designated as rears in actuality just the same as the ones listed as fronts?

Or am I too far into the weeds on this?

Not in the weeds at all. The 3.50-19 is a front tire.
It's o.k. to use a front tire as a rear tire but never the other way round.

Having done this sort of thing before I know that when a front is used as a rear the tire will not last anywheres near as long as a proper rear tire.

The good news is the K70 is available in a 18" proper rear tire and I now have an 18" rear wheel ready for a tire.

Here are some that come up. One of these won't fit the new UCE rear rims?

         I guess I'm vewwy confused. I don't understand why we can't just buy a front & a rear K70 3.50 19" instead of 2 fronts. I don't wanta be a PainITA, I just have to understand it.

Scottie, I posted in the Tech section links to Dunlop's website that state the 3.50x19 is rated as a "Front/Rear" tire by Dunlop.  http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tire-catalog/road/vintage/k70/
I am running a Dunlop K70 3.50x19 intended to be run as a rear tire.

I guess I didn't realize that was an option.  Sorry for the confusion.

Please excuse my ignorance.  I looked at the K-70s on-line and they don't look like they have a directional tread pattern.  Why would one need to run the rear in the reverse direction?

Cheers,

Dan K.

You don't.  The 3.50x19 is a front/rear tire.  The tread, as you've noticed, isn't directional and there are no arrows on the sidewall.

Is this picture taken on Camp Pendleton?

Oh, should have told you.  The lay of the cord has a lot to do with the intended use of a tire.  Front tires have cord joined to resist braking forces.  Rear tires have cord designed to resist accelerating torques applied to them.  So to help keep a front tire from separating the cord, it is run backwards on the rear so the forces applied to the tire are in the right direction to prevent the cord tearing apart.  It's OK on a low power bike like the RE single, it's a dangerous practice on a 50 or 60 hp bike.  But most of those have 18" or less rear tires for which there are plenty of rear tires to choose from.

Try to get a 3.25X19 for the Front, It will handle better. You can always save any extra 3.50's for the rear. My 2010 G5 Deluxe Handles fantastic with k70'S, 3.50 rear & 3.25 front.
Best Wishes, Craig McClure
