I am running a Hitchcock bottle type EFI silencer on my G5/Electra, with a fishtail on the end. A few weeks back the bike developed what sounded like a death rattle after a longish spell on the motorway. It turned out to be the exhaust baffle.  This had shed its retaining nut & bolt, and was only stopped from shooting out the exhaust by the fishtail. With the engine running, the noise the baffle made rattling about inside the tailpipe was truly horrible, but the fix was simple.

Have heard of other mufflers disintegrating internally. The upswept ones seem to be the most likely to fail. Those are the ones with the tubes bent at both ends, not ones that are upswept with an angle adapter.
