When I got to work and turned the key off, the starter engaged and cranked the engine.  Key out, no change.  Kill switch to "kill" no change.  I put the bike in gear and "killed" it, but the starter still tried to crank.  Quickly disconnected the battery.  When I reconnected the battery a few minutes later (key out) the starter started to crank again.  Turned the ignition "on" - fuel pump did not energize and the bike cranked until the battery started to weaken.

The starter is shorted "hot" somewhere...

Any ideas?

Thanks...

When this happened to me it was the starter relay (black lump at front of battery box). Try whacking it with a big screwdriver handle as a temporary fix, but it'll happen again. Replace it. I went through three before they sent me the new improved one..

It's worth a whack... thanks, Will...

Good luck.

It's the time-honoured method - if in doubt, give it a clout.. ;)

The whack worked... no more starter crank... key on energized the fuel pump. The lump is behind the batter box on my C5, BTW.

Battery is drained, though.  Time for an emergency run to fetch my charger.

Thanks,

In the industry, we call that kind of repair "Fonzie-ing it".

Reminds me of my favorite computer saying:  What's the difference between hardware and software?  Hardware are the parts you can kick.

I've always lived by my catch phrase "Didn't work?  Use a bigger hammer!"
When working on cars and bikes, I also like to play a game I call "I Win".  Which means stubborn jobs that don't want to cooperate get their ass kicked with hammers, air tools and pry bars until I win.     ;D

We always say, "Don't use force, just get a bigger hammer"! I was a professional blacksmith for several years. My big hammer was a 20lb Little Giant the whole thing weighed about 600 lbs. When I hit things with that they moved.
