The TTO Tachometer displays rpm when the engine is running, and when you stop the engine it displays the max rpm reached and total run time in hours. You don't need to interfere with any of your bike's wiring, as its only input is from a wire coiled round the engine's HT lead.

And if you get bored with it on your bike, you can always stick it on your lawnmower...

This is a cute little easy DIY TTO tach-hour sold by Trailtech.

To my knowledge it has an internal battery that is good for 5 years and the battery is non-replaceable. Will need to buy new tach every five years - not so bad for the price and convenience.

I put one of those on my riding mower.  Still working after 7 years.  The only hookup is to wrap the inductive lead around the spark plug wire and secure it with a tie-wrap or tape.

I kind of like that little guy.  I like the simple installation and the fact that it records max RPMs and hours.  Not bad for $38.  The only problem I see is no back lighting, but that's not a biggie.

I disagree.  While I NEVER use the tach as a shift point guide when I'm getting on it, it IS nice to know where your motor is spinning.  Especially at highway speeds on these bikes.  When cruising down the interstate, it would be really nice to know just where the motor is at speed wise so you can reassure yourself you don't overheat and lockup the motor.  For me, it would be nice to have the Max RPM read back after taking a pass down the 1/4 mile or a run around the dirt track.  You can even use a tach to help calculate gear ratios for the crank shaft and counter shaft gear sprockets to obtain your most efficient set up for your needs, whether for torque or speed.

So, no, tachs are not "unnecessary".  While not for everybody (and everybody has their own opinion) I have to say that they do have their place.
