2005 Bullet 500 with about 1000 miles on it.  Oil was changed at 800 miles and looks full and clean.  Engine made some scraping noise occasionally or maybe was pinging could not identify where noise was coming from.  The bike stalled and now the motor is rapping.  Any suggestions on what to look for?

Thanks

Don't quite understand what you mean by rapping.  The bike stalled, I assume you were able to get it restarted.  Try to explain the scraping noise, what was going on when you heard that.  Did you do something to make it stop?

pinging, now rapping?

Is it the valves?  Maybe need tappet adjustment.....

Worth checking, anyway.  Easy to do.

It's making a racket now.  I know noises are hard to explain.  We are going to look at it this afternoon and maybe I will have a better explanation.  I'm going to change the oil and filter.  Hand crank it and check the valves.

Here is an odd thing - the oil looks like the day we put it in.  bad oil pump?  blocked oil filter?

All thoughts are welcome.

the Sound is hard knocking noise.  When the bike stalled it was sitting at a traffic light.

it would not restart at the light but did after pushing it into a gas station and letting it sit for a few minutes.  We ran it for maybe 10 seconds then shut it down.  we haven't tried starting it again.

the scraping noise sounded like low octane ping when letting off the throttle after normal acceleration.

It sounds like the dreaded piston seizure to me, I've burnt up 2 pistons !!!
the Quality of the oem piston is poor to shitty. At 1000 miles, let the dealer cover it

I agree with dogbone,  if it were me I'd get it to the dealer ASAP.  Sounding like a big end or piston failure.

Turns out the exhaust tappet retaining nut had backed off and there was about 1/2" of play in the pushrod.  What a sound!  I thought for sure we had burned the piston but came here for some suggestions.

Thanks everyone.

It seems to be running great now but still need to test ride it.

Good deal.  That thing can sound like an AK-47 if it gets too loose........

I'm surprised that with 1/2 inch of slop it even ran at all. It should have quit running or at least let you know long before that.
Glad it worked out for ya.
