Purchased the hardened washers from Hitchcocks.
How do you remove the standard washers that got crushed in the holes? They made the head difficult to remove.

Try to get a small punch in from the bottom, you can sometimes just catch the edge of the washer and knock it out. If they're really jammed heat around the area then knock them out. Also a drill bit or bolt extractor will work. It's just be patient. You just don't want to ruin the aluminum.  ERC

I used a piece of drill rod that barely fit into the holes as a drift and tapped them through from the bottom up.  A regular drift will work too, just make sure the tip is ground flat and not rounded from previous use.

In her case the only solution seems to drill thru, as the washers are really jammed. Is the drill size you used 11/32"? - my measurement of the hole size is about 8.7 mm. My closest drill bit is 8.5 mm that will not solve the problem ....
(We use metric, inch tools are not common at tool shops ...)

I didn't use a drill bit.  I just picked through some blank drill rods I had laying about and tried them in turn.  Not sure the size as it wasn't marked and I didn't measure.

Try heating the area. Then try tapping them out.  ERC

Thank you all,
the old crushed washers (that made very hard to remove the head) have been removed without mistakes and pitfalls - no damages to the head. Saved a lot of my beer money  ;D

The hardened washers have been in place, that should make a lot easier to remove the head next maintenance.
