Anyone doing so for the Iron engine?

Been wanting to use a diesel 15w40 but my only concern is that the hot Indian summer + the 40weight just might make the Iron barrel eat it's oil and itself. Been using Motul 5100 for a good time now but want to make the switch to non-bike oil in the engine - it is twice the price and i must change oil every 2500-3000km, so not making much financial sense.

Why diesel oil - I feel it'll be able to keep the engine cleaner(?). Please feel free to let me know if I am incorrect in assuming so.

Will be sticking with a JASO-MA rated 10w30 in the clutch.

I've been running Rotella T 15w40 oil in my bike, seems to work just fine.

It's okay to do.
It has good zinc and phosphorous content, typically.
A little bit heavy on the detergent, but it seems to do fine.

Since it doesn't share with the primary/clutch the biggest concern is viscosity breakdown under thermal load.  Some of the store brands may not be so great, but all the major brands like Rotella, Delo, Tection should be good.  They're formulated for Turbo use and turbo bearings run hot.  I used 15w-40 Rotella T in my Sportster and Electra Glide without any problem.

Thanks for the replies.

We don't have the Rotella T here but do have another good one - Mobil Delvac MX 15W40.

The flash point of Delvac is higher than the Motul i'm currently using and the difference in viscosity @ 100 degrees celsius is not that great. So i reckon it should be fine.

On a similar note - what sort of additive packages are beneficial to the Iron barrel? I keep hearing zddp, tbn etc in oils.

Delvac is good oil.

ZDDP in a moderate level, such as 1100ppm or a little more. It doesn't need to be really any more, but a little more is still okay.
It's good for the cam lobes and lifters.

Delvac MX is a CH/CI rated oil and should have it's level about 1300.  It's not limited by the catatonic diverter/particulate trap restriction.  CJ oils are limited to 1200 ppm or less.  CM to under 900? - can't remember CM off hand.
On the high extreme is Mobil 1 V-Twin which is 1750 ppm.  IMHO it's really much ado about nothing from magazines, advertisers, and speculation by armchair experts as back in the 1960s (the good ole days according to the armchair flat tappet cam experts) the zinc content was probably no more than 600 or 700 max.  It's not like stock Enfield cams are high lift, heavy spring, high performance cams.  The famous GM Additive only brought zinc levels up to 900.

It's not just tappets but any part that rubs under load like valve stems, rocker tips and piston skirts that benefit from zinc and phosperous.

 The auto makers had a few years early notice that the anti wear additives were going bye bye and the work around was roller valve trains, nitrided cams and folowers, various anti friction coatings, changes in materials and machined finish specs and different clearances.
