Hey all, long time no see.  ive put another 2000 miles on my bike problem free.  pretty soon it'll be time for a little maintenance so i will have to learn to change my oil, change the break fluid, and consult the internet for any other necessary tasks.

anyhow simple question like always cause i can't ever seem to find an answer.  someone stole my gas cap last night.  (seriously?!  why?!  >:( they also turned on my high beams, put on my turn signal, and took the pleasure of adjusting my mirrors)  so i need to buy a gas cap and was going to order a flat black locking one from the internet.  what on earth size are our gas caps (2011 g5)?  i didn't know they come in different sizes, and i cant seem to find a size in the manual.

on a more positive note- i have had 2 RE sightings up here in Carlsbad, just north of San Diego- some old creepy guy at a bar, and some younger guy cruising the coast.  too bad i was in my car, i got really excited!   ;D

Hi, sounds like you have the same bike as mine (in the UK the G5 is the Enfield Electra EFI). Is it the flip-up petrol cap?  If so, then Hitchcocks in the UK have them, part number 144887.

http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/partsbooks/pages/2565/Fuel_Tank_

Your local dealer should be able to source one for you as well.

Good luck,

Blair

Doesn't seem like the flip up one to me. Isn't it that all the flip ones on Enfields have the lock system?

In this case I'm assuming it was the bottle cap type..that's why the idiots played around and took it off. snowkid, your dealer should be able to provide a spare. Or, you can permanently switch to a lock type fuel cap also shown on the Hitchock's website - http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-frame-petrol Part Nos. 144887, 92615D, 14258.

And this may seem very silly :-X but if you are near the area where the cap was stolen, you may want to have a look around (100 meter radius  ::)) They might've dumped it somewhere close. (I know, it is unlikely but who knows)...or it must be lying somewhere far far awaaaaay

It's a Triumph part so if the RE dealer doesn't have one in stock try Triumph.

So this means I can't go to Walmart and buy the $10 generic gas cap cover and wait the 2 weeks for a nice one to be delivered? I live far from the dealership and am in transition with two full time jobs for the next week. If I drive with my ghetto-rigged hairtie/plastic cover will I die?

Not sure if the threads are the same, but if you have a fairly generic car around try that cap.  If it works you can get one of those at any auto store for maybe $10, and you can get a locking one.  Won't look pretty but should work.

Hi, You should be OK with your rigged lid unless you drop the bike, in which case spilling gas might be a fire hazzard. Also any make shift tank lid needs a Breather Hole so gas will flow to fuel pump properly. When I have lost gas caps, I have wound a rubber band around a rolled up spare sock & stuffed it in the tank opening - this will breathe (but could act as a wick if exposed to flame). Also you shouldn't top off your fuel to keep it from sloshing over whatever temporary measure you take.
Speaking for all of us "creepy old guys", we'd enjoy seeing pictures here of you on your Enfield. Best regards, Craig

The Cali bike fuel cap doesn't breathe, it seals.  The breathing happens through the charcoal canister vent system.  Regardless, a rolled up sock would still work but I'm sure it's not CARB approved ;)

i have a high tolerance for creepy old dudes... this one fits the description (im a special-ed teacher and spend most of my days on public transit with the kids, i know a creeper when i see one ;D)

i have no idea about an 06 bonneville... i also had no idea that a gas cap was SO hard to come by.  Looks like it'll be a sock, rubber band, and a plastic bag (maybe ill even spring for the freezer quality ones) for a few weeks until things mellow out for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions, unfortunately i couldn't find a car one to fit for now.

Take it from a creepy old dude.

Go to a auto supply and tell the clerk you need his/her help with buying a new gas cap.

Tell him/her the thread is 1.774 (45mm) in diameter.
Also tell him/her the distance between the threads is .237 (6mm) and it has a O-ring up where the threads meet the bottom of the cap to seal it.

Armed with these numbers, if a cap exists with these dimensions (and it probably does) they will be able to fix you up in no time.

I had an '06 Scrambler. It was the same cap.
As intimated, you don't need to drill a hole in the cap. The tank breathes through the bottom and internally.
The dealer you bought your bike from should have a cap or two laying around. He supplied Enfield with caps when they first got the Cali models in! Call Art!
