Replacing Crank Seal On 700 Twin
on:

I have a bad oil leak between the primary case and the engine block where the crank is. Is it the chain case oil seals that I need to replace? Also, can I install them with out disassembling the motor? I need to replace the alternator and was thinking of just replacing those seals while I was in there and had it tore apart.

Yes you can replace the seal on the inner primary. Depending which primary is on the motor the later ones are a rubber seal the early ones are felt. there is also a seal for the gearbox shaft, can be eithe rubber or felt. If it's felt you can put a bullet 4 speed rubber one on that shaft. You don't need to disassemble the motor. ERC

Thanks ERC. From looking at Hitchcocks, it seems like I have the multi-piece felt seal set. I believe the transmission shaft seal is rubber though. Either way, they're cheap and easy to replace.

Don't order anything till you pull it apart, you never know what inner primary you may have on there. the bikes old and may have been changed to a later or earlier one. They all bolt on the same basically. ERC

Eff that crap. I'll order both and send back what I don't need. That's too much down time. I want to ride now damn it! LOL Actually it's going to rain all today. Bummer, I wanted to try out the new GPS speedometer app I downloaded for my phone.

I may have both types at home I'll check, the shipping would be cheaper. ERC

I've got the big and small felt ones, no rubber ones. ERC
