Side stand of RE is short and the bike leans too much.  Some forum members have attached a piece of about 1" tube or metal at the bottom of the foot to make it longer.  They had nice pictures and did not have any problem.

I thought I will do the same, should be easy and what could go wrong ! Well, there is something called Murphy's Law that reminds that things do go wrong.

Attached a water pipe iron coupler which is 1&1/8" long and has 3/4x1/2" wide holes at the ends.  Since it was supposed to be permanent, I applied JB Weld and was happy to see that it attached so firmly.

Then as I took the bike off center stand, there was a loud metallic clunk sound. The center stand had hit the 'extended' portion of the side stand.  As I tried by hand to lower center stand, I could see where it had hit the coupler.

The exact location of 'extension piece' on the foot of side stand affects which part of center stand it hits.

Perhaps all the RE bikes are not of exact same dimensions in every respect, so the size that worked in some bikes does not fit in other bike.  Or this coupler is slightly longer than I expected to work.  Now, I am thinking of taking the side stand off the frame and then cutting of about 1/8" of the coupler - unless someone has a better suggestion.

The second picture shows the two colliding.

looks like it's real close to not touching....
if you have a 4" grinder or a die grinder you could just take enuff off the bottom, maybe
an 1/8th inch to get your clearance, it won't be much.

Just be sure the center stand is down when you put the sidestand up, then raise the centerstand. Mine, that I did that with, may have had the plumbing mounted a little forward on the sidestand, and it had the plug on the bottom reducing the bottom of the assembly diameter. Noting ever touched, though. Mine as a bit shorter as it was just a cap with a plug screwed into the bottom.
More unexpected problems for you. You're gonna lose it! If you just JB Welded it on it WILL fall off. I had a bolt through two of them along with JB Weld and lost them both. The nut apparently unscrewed despite being JB Welded in. The whole thing probably rotated, but that says the external JB Weld didn't hold. I finally had to tap the cap and run a screw through it and back it up with a nut and JB Weld. That one stayed on, which was good, because I sure didn't want to go back to the stock sidestand!

I see bullets here with a long sidestand. The bullet almost stands upright. Apparently two models are in use at the factory and it's kind of luck which one is mounted. There is no logic in what model ends up with which stand though most have the short one. I wonder these longer ones must pop up in the US as well, or don't they?

As a side note I called myself lucky to have the short one as I've ended up at slanted roadsides where a long one would be embarrassing, to put it mildly.

I bolted a 3/8 " drive, 3/4 " socket I had a duplicate of on the bottom of my kickstand. Works like a champ.

It's not luck, it's the same stand!
The 18" wheeled RE's stand up properly, the 19" wheeled versions lean way over there. They need a little assistance!

@Mike:  Good idea, but I don't have a grinder.  So I had taken off the stand.

@Bare:  I will keep an eye on these attachments that they do not fall off.

SOLUTION
Inserted several washers in the spring coils to pull the spring off side stand.  Then unscrewed its bolt. The threads of the bolt had gone bad so went to hardware store and bought a grade 8 bolt and lock nut that would fit the stand. It takes M8-1.25 x 45 mm bolt and M8-1.25 lock nut.

Cut off about 1/8" off the tip of 'extension coupler' by hacksaw.  It was not fun, since it was pretty hard and took quite some time and one blade was lost.

Put it back on frame and it worked quite well - did not hit the center stand and bike leaned much less.

LESSON LEARNT

It was not a good idea to attach to the 'toe' (extreme end) of the side stand.  Instead middle of the foot will be better location.

While at it, I went a little further to analyse this piece of RE.

The foot of the side stand is at an angle to the ground, when 1" high 'extension' is fixed to the 'toe' of the foot.  At the 'heel' of foot the height is 1/2" from ground and in the middle of foot it is 3/4".  These are approximate numbers but the trend is clear.

This means a 1/2" high piece at the 'heel' of foot will offset the motorcycle lean by same degrees as 1" piece attached at 'toe'.

The best 'attachment' will be a wedge of 1/2" at one end and 1" at the other.  This will give maximum surface area for contact to ground as well as the foot of side stand, making it more secure.

Thought about a scenerio what if the coupler cracks or fall off (as happened to Bare).

I added a second piece right next to it.  Bought a 3/4" hardened steel grade 8 nut, which had perfect width and height that fitted well.  Attached washer on both sides by JB weld - to give more surface area for attachment to side stand and to ground.  Used JB weld and clamped it to stand for overnight.  Next day it was pretty solid glued to stand.

Now these 2 pieces both touch the ground and give more secure feeling to stand.  Bike leans less, perfectly to my satisfaction.  Used it a few times and like it a lot.

As you know, I'm one of the people who attached a piece of 1" X 1" square steel tubing to my G5's sidestand.

Thinking about this topic I looked at my sidestand extension and the centerstand with both of them in the "up" position.

I know we both have G5's but there must be some differences between yours and my 2011.  My addition has a good 3 inch clearance between the square tubing and the centerstand footpeg.  Strange!

I guess that's what happens when we get "hand built" motorcycles.  ;D

As for your additions, I'm glad their working but I fear the JB Weld is going to snap off the first time you forget to put up your sidestand and ride off.
It won't "touch down" until you make your first left hand turn and even then it probably won't cause you to loose control of the bike.  You will just hear a grinding noise.

The impact with the pavement will do its best to break the epoxy bond and knock off your extensions though.

A washer that fits inside the pipe coupling but won't go thru its small diameter along with a bolt and a nut going thru a hole in the factory sidestand would make a strong assembly that won't break when it hits the ground. :)

Use a "fender washer" with the smallest bolt hole you can find for this.
The small bolt hole thru the foot of the sidestand won't weaken it too much and the large size of the fender washer will keep it from going thru the inside of the pipe coupling.

When my side stand elongates enough to cause me problems, I first make sure the Viagra is safely locked up.

And on the serious side..JB weld?!  You're asking the bike to tip over, my man.  Get someone to weld it there correctly, or maybe see if something can be drilled to bolt an extension in place.  But while you have a pro welder on the job, I'd spend the extra coin to have the side stand lengthened properly.

My own side stand is a ridiculous, useless stub, even when extended. :(

@Bare, @Arizoni and @AgentX:

Thanks for your expert advice that JB Weld will not be able to hold the sheer force if side stand is dragged.

I am either going to find a welder or drill a hole through the foot of side stand and use a bolt/nut to secure the large nut, which already has fender washers on both sides or add a washer to coupler (or do both of them) - before it is too late.

NB - @AgentX, No need of Viagra yet  :)

As usual an expert presentation.  8)

Hereby an image of my solution for parking in dirt: simple camel toe made from tin cans with a cord incorporated so I don't have to bend over.
If a higher stance is desired increase the thickness of the toe.

I found a local welder who is a motorcycle rider himself. He looked at the stand and wanted to do a real professional job. He took off the stand, then knocked off 'attachments', ground the chrome stand surface, cut off a rectangular piece of steel 1" x1.5"x5/8", welded to stand, ground again, silver painted and put back the stand.  Took about half an hour and he was real pro both in work and in his 'fees'.  But the result is worth it as it looks like part of the stand - not as an afterthought slapped on appendage.
