My Hitchcocks EFI silencer is turning yellow at the back of the bulge after 900 miles. Is this a symptom of something I ought to paying attention to, or just normal? I haven't seen it on any of the other pipes I've tried - usually a bit of blue, but not yellow.

No need to worry, it is normal. Mine has been that yellowish colour at the back and front for ages. (4500mi +)
See attached.

Don't worry about the blueing, worry about the heat shield falling off! I lost one already, replaced it then took it back off. Next up, blacking out the muffler with high heat paint. My Military G5 will look much better for it..

Thanks chaps. Reassuring.

No heatshield - it's an aftermarket pipe (see pic).
The heatshield fell off the original torpedo tube two weeks after I got the bike..

The colors go from yellow to blue to purple. Very blue or purple you're either riding it very hard or you may have a mixture problem. Some silencers build their own hotspots, though so the coloring may be just a trait of that silencer.
If it's only turning yellow, not a problem.

Here in the States you ride around a circle a few times, stop once or twice, then you're allowed to do whatever you like with no warning at all to other motorists :)

I kid a bit.  As many others have done I took the MSF class and never needed to take the riding portion of the exams, just the written.  Still, I did take my driving test when I was seventeen and it was a joke.  A lap around a neighborhood block with a few stops, one three point turn, and one parrallel park.  I never got over 25mph.  The driving/riding tests in the States are really limited compared to anything I've seen my family in Europe do.  If you fail over here I'd say you really, really shouldn't be anywhere near the controls of a vehicle.
