Hi all,
I have got a bullet 500 from '64. Bought in India 15 years ago.
Havent used it for 8 years. Just fired it up again after a good clean out of the carbi and petrol filter. Runs fantastic again, it just wont idle without the choke. Timing seems to be spot on. Get's enough spark, voltage, etc..
We have been fiddling with the idling screw and air screw for quit some time but as soon as we turn of the choke its over.
Anyone has had same issues, any ideas what to do.
Some direction would be appreciated enormously.
Thanks

First check it for intake or exhaust leaks, which could possibly cause that. Especially a hole or rip in the rubber manifold hose which connects the carb to the engine.
Then, tell us what jets it has in it, and what altitude you are at, and what air filter and exhaust system you are using, and maybe we can help.

It's not '64 500. There were none. It might be a '64 frame, but it has a 1990s engine in it.

Or it's actually a 350...

How is your carb attached to the head?  Via a rubber hose, or directly clamped to the head by 2 bolts?

below are ways to tell 350 or 500??

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Only way i could ever tell em apart was that if you have eight fins on
the barrel its a 500, if it's seven its a 350.
500 = 1 ¾ pipe
350 =  1 ½  pipe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the 500 will have vertical fins above the exhaust port on the head

Easiest way to tell is if the carb bolts on or uses the induction hose...

not necessarily, The PWK flatslide bolts on the 500....
If it is a rubber mount than you can bet it'sa 500.

actually the fins above exhaust have always been the giveaway to me.

as in no rubber mounts on the 350...
                    but just because it is bolted does not make it a 350... Some 500's may be bolted...

I had no idea.  Thanks for the info-looks like the vertical fins are the way to check, then.  Sorry for the mis-info.

I would double check that you dont have a blocked idle jet in the carb, and that you have reassembled it correctly sounds like fuel starvation at idle to me either that or big air leak on the inlet side.

Yeah, definitely sounds like an intake leak or incorrect timing.  Being that the timing didn't likely move when it's been sitting for 8 years I'm leaning towards intake leak.

Deffo seems like a clogged pilot jet if you can get it to idle on choke. Did u remove ALL the brassware from the carb and thoroughly clean the carb body and jets? including the emulsion tube ( needle jet). Soak the entire carb overnight in thinner and blow carb clean spray through all orifices. Do remove any rubber bits.

Do it thoroughly else you won't really enjoy it.

If this doesn't solve the issue, you will have to look at the intake valve.

8 years is a lot of time. I left my Enfield standing for 6 months with fuel in carb ( yes stupid thing) and everything was gummed up. Thats Indian petrol for ya!
