Here we get ice and slush most of the Winter months rather than snow that stays frozen, so it is messy to ride anyway.  Just laziness on my part, but I don't want to deal with it anymore.

It seems clear from this thread that there are as many sound reasons for tucking bikes up in warm garages over the winter, as there are for taking them out and using them as intended.

That's fine, each to their own.

My point was that if you *do* take your bike out in more adverse conditions , then something which one owner/rider might regard as unsightly and a pain in the butt (e.g. a waxy coat on the engine, that doesn't just wash off) is actually a really useful thing.

There are other ways to protect a bike from the ravages of road salt.  The best of these I reckon is "Scottoiler 365" a water based corrosion inhibiter.

I used to douse my wee suzuki rv125 in it over the winter, and come spring it cleaned up just fine.

Here's to many a commute or run in the country on a sunny but cold (winter's) day.

I'm with Scottie J on the lighter fluid (Naphta). It is my go to cleaner, after spit, on my bass guitars.

Back in the 1970s, Ducati recommended in their owners manuals to lightly smear Vaseline all over the bare aluminum parts, to protect them from corrosion.

I generally power wash the bike every few weeks, eventually the Bangalore grime, mud and dirt gets the better of anything, and I end up retouching with a matte black spray paint.

Q: Why did the lobster take a liking to the chef?
A: The chef knew how to butter him up.

There.  A greasy lobster joke.  Remember, everyone, it was Roverman's idea!
