Hello all,

I am new to the forum, although, I have had my Hounds Arrow for a few years.
I have a rolling basket case that I am trying to identify.

 I believe it is a 57 Clipper?

 Any idea's?

Perhaps you or someone can help.

#s on frame: 5057 (stamped in the frame), either 4758 or 4759 (cast into the frame).

#s on engine: There is a 57 stamped by itself on the drive side. 2013 is stamped on the front. Each case half on the rear has 813, which I'm assuming is case half #s.

#s on gearbox: RBB  996. Its a 4 speed gearbox.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a 1955 or earlier frame, not a 1957 frame.
And the engine looks like a big-head Bullet (Fury) engine.
Don't know how far back the Fury goes, but with that engine, that's my guess.
As far as I know, there were never any numbers stamped on the engine which directly designated year of manufacture, so if there's a 57 there, it's probably just part of the engine number.

The number on the front of the crankcase (well, on the twins, anyway) is supposed o be the same as the gearbox number.

I am not an expert, but my Granddad and my Dad had a motorcycle shop that was originally started in 1932, w/ the Indians and they were still in business when the Enfields were rebadged as Indians from '55-'59. My Granddad had a '55 Woodsman (which had the 500cc Single engine) And My Dad had a '55 Fire Arrow (250cc, before the Hounds Arrow was built) That engine looks just like the 250cc engine. From what I know, They didn't change much for several years. An example is that the Enfields that wore the Indian name (from '55-'59) changed very little. In '55, just as one example, the Indian name on the gas tank, was a decal and later (don't remember the exact year, '57 maybe?) had a metal plate which carried an indian head with the name Indian. And things like mufflers changed their shape somewhat, The Tomahawk (500cc Twin), at one point, had the exhaust pipes come out of the heads, go low (like the others) and turn upward at an angle, just past the front footpegs. But, around '57 (I think), The tomahawk had the 2 pipes merge into one and the muffler went straight back. There are probably other things that could be brought out, but I can't recall, at this time. Not trying to sound like a know it all, just trying to shed some light on this bike.  ;)

The picture looks looks a '55 250 Clipper to me. It is a 250 frame. That engine is a bit skinny to be a 500. Twas the first year for the casquette which had no pilots.
