After fitting the gas cap conversion kit to my bike today I found something pretty interesting...not only after tightening down the 2 screws that hold it on I noticed that the metal being pinched down onto the tank caused a nice chip of paint to fly off.... don't worry, Ive got some brush on touch up paint in the mail already but after starting the bike up with the fresh cap and fresh gasket, I noticed the bike running extremely rough. blipped the throttle and resulted in massive backfiring. knowing that the bike is fuel injected and knowing that the ecu needs time to adjust I took the bike out for a spin....after about 5 minutes all was well. It has been fine ever since.....

the interesting thing I was wondering is this:
was my old gas cap not making a good enough seal?
was it causing more air to be sucked into the mixture?
How can such a crappy seal be made by the stock cap?

has anyone else experienced too much air being sucked in through their gas cap?

I thought it was very odd. or am I completely missing the mark on what was going on?

Thanks guys.

ps. what I learned was that doing this conversion was a great mod to the bike.

I have had the kit sitting around waiting for it to self-install. What did you think of the cap itself? Looked a bit lower in fit/finish compared to the heavy duty base unit. Looks like it has some kind of a vent held together by a split pin, and I can't tell how freely that is supposed to move.... ??? Just curious..... :)

I'll be honest, the cap is kind of a pain in the ass to get on.  It makes me feel like I'm over thinking it then I test it by grabbing one side and moving it up and down..... and sure enough, it wasn't seated correctly. try again.

I wish the cap was a little better.
anyone know if the caps hitchcocks' offer, the "1950s style" will work?
I emailed them to make sure but it looks like it will fit as a replacement

I'm assuming the conversion kit you're talking about is the flip to round cap kit on the hitchcock site.  I'm thinking about ordering it as well, as I'm tired of the rattle from the loose stock cap, and would rather have the twist cap anyway.  I'm pretty sure I need the replacement for the 144887, but I'm not positive.  I've got a 09 C5 Classic.  Anybody know for sure which I need?  Thanks.

I'm not sure what cap the 2009 has, sorry I can't help with that BUT
If you do this mod I highly recommend swapping the supplied petrol cap with the UK made Part no. 15941    CAP (SLIGHT DOME), PETROL TANK.

When I received the conversion kit I was really unhappy with the supplied cap(Indian made, from the 90's enfields) and I emailed the swell guy's over at hitchcocks and told them about it and they mailed me a new cap for free. SO if you feel up to it, email them before you place your order and see if you can just get that cap with your initial order.

The cap remaining off wouldn't cause too much gas to be be injected. It sounds like the bike may have been flooded in the starting attempt. at any rate, look elsewhere than the cap for the problem.

New cap got installed yesterday.....definitely looks a bit like what ScooterBob would describe as "agricultural"!  Not too bad though.....I will leave it in for now.
