Well having clocked more than 8400 miles now I see the front Avon speedmaster is down close to the 1mm min depth of tread and the rainy season is approaching. The rear sm mk2 is looking good for another 100k miles (barely worn). Any suggestions for a good replacement tyre change (front only and or both)? What seams to be the best all-round combination?

Both front and rear switch to AM26.   90/90 front 100/90 rear

Dunlop K-70s work very well, too. Very sticky. And the price is right. Anything has to be an improvement on the SkidMasters.

Thanks , Barenekd,
Had K70s on a bike back in the '70s and was not overly impressed at the time, they were as hard as sm and speedmaster back in those days. Must be using a far better compound now. Have ordered a pair of am26 for now and will see how they perform on the ground-up surfaces they call pavement round the bay.

Well thanks for everyones help. AM26's as recommended by Ragmas arrived and were fitted last weekend. Having pinched one tube for the rear and replacing it all went well (not complaining , only the second tube I have pinched). Took it for a test ride on I880 which must rate as one of California's best ground-up freeways and the handling was much improved , no more wagging of the front end on every rut and seam. Actually inspires some confidence when driving among the coffins.

That was the feeling I got when I first put them on.  A world of difference.

New Dunlop K70's are actually really good....similar tread pattern as the 70s, but vastly improved ride and handling.....huge improvement over the Avons AM26s.
