Update: Cannot figure out how the sprag gear should come out. It will not release. See pic.

Any one have any suggestions?

Ed

Will someone please welcome me to the sprag clutch grenade club. The money to repair it seems outrageous in light of the fact that it could probably, most likely, do it again.

If I can figure out how to remove the intermediate gear cluster this Enfield will become a little lighter.

To do that the primary chain case has to come off.

Dumping the e start entirely frees up a nice spot to mount a spin on oil filter.  ;)

it is the gear clust to the right I think that has the sprag on the backside. If you are just wanting to remove the gears and leave the hump, the inner primary must be removed to expose the cover on the backside. then you can just remove the gear clusters, reinstall, and find a plug to cover the starter hole. Little expense so long as you are not one of those that believe that the hump must go as God and The Queen intended....

Solved:
Supposedly no special tools is required for the sprag disassembly. As it works out nothing is the same for me as everyone else. In the end, after prying w/ a screwdriver and hitting the gear with a brass hammer failed, I tried a pair of vice grips on the shaft and pulled hard. The shaft came out finally. see pic...
Evidently the shaft was farther inside the inner bushing or something preventing it from releasing. Dunno, don't care. The piece of shit is gone FOREVER now.   ;D

Glad you worked it out.
That problem will be gone forever.

I'm noticing that it's "that time of year again", and we're seeing more sprag failure reports coming in again. Happens every year.

Yup.

Time to richen up the jettings to correct the part lean condition caused by cooler, denser air of Autumn and winter.
