My father just gave me an Indian he had under his garage for a long time.He says its a 1956 and I agree. The engine stamp is 5T 4794 on the left crankcase. I have found no other numbers on it so far(probably haven't looked in the right place yet).I need to know if it is a Tomahawk, or whatever so I can get a manual, parts etc...I just need to be sure. The handle bars on it are medium high (about 24 inch) ape-hangers if you will. Are these add-ons or did any of the indians come with these? Thanks!!!

They didn't come with bars that high. I'll check the #s I have at home to see what model it is.  ERC

Just checked the # on the 500cc motor I have and it's 5T4906 on the motor listed as a 1956 Tomahawk. The #s are close yours could be a 1955. The way to tell is contact REOC and give them the frame and engine #s. The 55 has a magdyno, different frame, air cleaner etc.  Put a couple of side view pictures on could probably tell if mostly original stuff is still there.   ERC

I think the coil ignition was introduced in '57. '55 and '56 should have a mag.
Pictures would be helpful.

Bare, The 55 had a Magdyno to give it spark and a charging system. The 56 had a different motor more like the 700cc and I'm pretty sure had an SR2 Magneto and charging system under the primary like the Bullets. Pictures would really help. ERC

The only sure way to identify this is to get the info from the factory registers held by the REOC. Having said that, I think this will turn out to be a '56 model year Tomahawk which left the factory in December 1955, or possibly in the following January. The new late-type frame without the cast swingarm mounts, first seen on the '55 model year Trailblazer, was standard on the Tomahawk from November '55, by which time these would be to '56 model specification.
ERC is correct in thinking the '56 model had an SR2 mag, with alternator charging, but the engine would still be the older type long stroke 500 twin. I think the later short stroke engine was first used for the '58 model year, though it must be remembered these would probably have commenced manufacture in the latter part of '57. These crossover production schedules cause confusion over dates, sometimes!
