I've been thinking about getting rid of it for exactly that reason. But it's SO CONVENIENT!! :-) What might you recommend instead that I can grab-and-go with (not a backpack, I need to leave my back free for cargo)...

I use some kitchen drawer liner between the tank bag and the gas tank.  Get the rubber kind with holes in it, available at Walmart.  Use the tank bag as a pattern to cut the drawer liner to match the bag.

I don't like to use tank bags either but they are sooo handy.  No scratches yet.

me too with the tank bag only my problem is that the bag is rubbing off the matte paint and making it shiny. i took off the bag and just use the canvas bags and the little pouch i have strapped to the grab handle
