Has anybody added additional lights to the back of their RE?  If so, what brand and what type; running, brake, turn signal, etc...

I've been told that the back of the bike is VERY dim at night and I'd like to improve the safety factor if possible.

Thanks.

This DOT approved LED light lit up like a Christmas tree, but has since been removed for unclear reasons during my ongoing tinkering. The two tiny sidelights are still there and are amazingly bright.

Start by replacing the bulb with a good name brand one.  The stock one is not great.  Also, the little round reflectors that you can get to hold your license Plate on are never a bad idea.

Has anybody added additional lights to the back of their RE?

I have installed LED strips as additional lights to the rear/brake OEM light and it has made a big improvement in its visibility at night.

Custom Dynamics makes direct LED replacements for your incandescent bulbs, as well.  No personal experience but I know they exist.

Of course if you put them in the turn signals, you'll need resistors (seems counter-productive) or a new LED-compatible flasher unit to get them to blink correctly.

I will have to check these out. The 2 variants of 1157 that I tried from Superbrightled were pretty dim compared to incandescent. Do you have a specific recommendation for 1157 and 1156 LED bulbs that are brighter than others? Thanks.

When I had my stock taillight I think I swapped out the 1157 for a 2357? I think that was it, same running light wattage, but much brighter as a brake light. I thought the stock light was actually pretty good, you'd be hard pressed to find one bigger, it looks like a trailer light.

When I went with my new light & plate mount I also changed out the turnsignals. The turnsignals I purchased had the option of being wired as running lights. I considered it for the additional visibility, but in the end decided against it, at least for now. That's always another option.

I recently followed a BMW on the road - its owner had converted the rear turn signals into "running lights".

Up close it was OK, however, as the space between us increased the red tail-light faded out quickly .....  Overpowered by the pair of brighter yellow lights on either side of it.

If I hadn't seen it up close, I'd have been taking evasive action as it looked like it was heading in my direction !

The point of this tale is ......   on the rear ..... constant-on lights really should be RED.

i have installed this kit on my klr650 and my triumph speed master.

it is a ring of red leds that go in your turn signals and ae low for running and bright for braking....they did a nice job of lighting the rear of the bike.
here is what they looked like on the speedy:

My Superbrightled 1197 is quite bright, more so than the stock light, and the brake light is brilliant.

Motorat,

That's a seriously nice piece of kit.  Bookemarked.

+1

In many US jurisdictions, that's mandated by law, and for precisely that reason.
