i wanted to change my bars to some that came off a f650gs. there is a tab that prevents the turn switch from rolling around the bar. on my other bikes this tab was plastic and easily removed.
on the RE it is like a metal dowl and i am having a time removing it. i tried with needle nose pliers and channel locks....i don't want to break the plastic.

how did you get yours out...if you removed it.
thanks

The alternative of course is to put the bars in a drill press and drill a matching hole.

go in with a dremel and a grinding bit. grind that sucker off and you'll have leeway on how you set up your controls on the bars.

If you grind it off make sure you have well secured bar ends so your throttle doesn't slide off the end if the bar.  A little tape under the control also helps hold it in place.

When I changed bars, I re-drilled the holes.  I don't want my levers sliding around the bars when I go to use them.

I cut the switchbox nubs off with an Xacto knife. Then a strip of 400 grit sandpaper was glued to the bars to keep the switch boxes from moving around.

As hillntx said, I just drilled another hole in there.

Only did it for the RHS.

As seen here (Will take a better pic once I get the bar-ends):

I just flipped my bars, and had the same issue. I ground the plastic tab off the left hand controls, and started grinding thermal tab off the right hand control. I lucked out, the metal peg heated up while I was grinding on it and it slid out. I used two sided 3M high strength automotive tape. It's thin and super tacky, used for emblems and such. One wrap around the bars held the controls firmly in place. Just make sure you have the angle you want before you put them on, or your going to have to start over again with fresh tape.
