The C-5 classic gets 85 advertized mpg where as the 2012 limited edition gets 75. what's the difference?

I think they realized that 85 u.s. m.p.g. was a bit far fetched. Now I'm sure someone has gotten or will claim to have gotten 85mpg. But I'd be a little skeptical. I once got 70mpg when I was riding all over at 40mph during break in now I average bout 60mpg. my speed being bout 60-65 mph most of the time.   bittercrick

I think it has to do with the size of a Imperial gallon and a US gallon.

I just filled up my tank on my 2011 G5.
For 166 miles traveled it burned 2.223 US gal. giving it  74.674 mpg.

Had I been in the UK where their gallons are 1.204 times larger than the US gallon the same amount of fuel would have been called 1.847 Imperial Gallons.

166 miles divided by 1.847 would indicate I was getting 89.885 "mpg".

Riding style and speed have a big impact on gas mileage.

getting 85 miles per US gallon should be easy at 45mph.

The best I've gotten is 80 MPG the first time I rode the bike from the shop where I bought it and riding around after that at 40-45 mph. I got 80 once riding about 40 mph freezing my butt off in the mountains at 6000-8000'.
I have to agree that the "85 mpg" has to be Imperial Gallons.
I have averaged 69 mpg for the last 4000 miles, including everything from freeway cruising at about 65 to mountain riding in the twisties.

I have a '09 G5 Military..and I get 70 mpg easily. Never less. I changed out the tires to Dunlop K70's, so perhaps that affected it a little..if it did mess up the mpg it was well worth the trade off for increased sure footedness..I never trusted those Speedmasters on crack sealed roads or turning on those wide striped crosswalks..and now I can run on dirt roads confident that I won't get dumped by a stray pebble.

Changing tires can affect the odometer/speedometer if they are even slightly larger or smaller than the tire that the bike was calibrated for.

Don't know bittercrick... Never thought to do the matty. Its an 60 mile ride each way to work and can do 180 miles easy on a tank with the light just going on steady at the end 10 miles or so most spotted is in the 55-60 mile per range.

  • Commute Time is Not the Worst Time of Day
The B5 is different (19" wheels at both ends), but for the first couple-thousand miles I was getting 58-59 mpg. Most of my riding is commuting on the Interstate. The mileage increased to a fairly consistent 65 mpg awhile back. At first, I gave the credit to the Givi Aerotech windscreen, but I'm thinking now that I may have slowed down a bit. I generally run at an indicated 70 mph, which is a true 65 mph. Before, I may have been running at an indicated 75 quite a bit of the time.

I rechecked my mileage and found an error in one of the early entries. From 4300 miles to the current 9800 miles, I have been averaging 70.009 mpg with the G5

I haven't been able to break through the high 50's but I have a big sail area and a wrist condition that twists up the throttle.  I guess that would be more of a brain condition now that I think of it.
