So I've seen many, MANY lengthy discussions about engine oil, a little talk about gearbox oil, but almost nothing about clutch oil.

The owners manual tells me to put in "the recommended oil", and as far as I've been able to tell Pete Snidal never touches on the topic.

I have a 2007 Bullet 500.  I was wondering what works best for you guys..

i think Pete recommends type F (made for older Fords) automatic transmission fluid in the primary. This is what i am using and it seems to work fine. I recall reading that other people use 20-50 engine oil as well.

I'm using the same oil in the primary as in the engine itself.  Castrol 20-50 motorcycle oil.  Seems to work fine.  Some on this board also use much more oil in their primary than the manual would suggest.  If you still have a working sprague clutch on your electric starter, I'd suggest using lots of oil in the primary too.

I recently started using Amsoil synthetic 20/50 in my engine and decided to put it in my primary this weekend.  I was worried the thicker oil might make it drag - but it feels great on the short test ride I have had.

And I honestly believe the engine is easier to kick over since I started using the synthetic oil in the engine.  Which must be a good sign.

I have a 2008 Classic AVL

The recommended clutch oil for my 2004 350 is 420 ml of 10W-30.

I'm still sticking with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.  This can handle severe transmission service in a four wheeler.  I also use it in moped two speed automatic transmissions.  Plus my Enfield dealer recommends it - also overfilling a bit for the starter gears.

My older 99 bullet had lots of clutch drag in traffic w/ 20w50. I switched to ATF, works much better. If n, you think about it, an automatic transmission has clutch packs very similar to a multi disc clutches, and most front wheel drive x-missions have chains, like the primary chain. ;D

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (or the manual's recommendation - personal choice) per KRW Cycles, Phillipsburg, Ohio.  Great service, knowledge and dialogue.  Small shop with hometown ambiance and a heavy work load.

When I switched from 20-50 to type F ATF my cold clutch slippage went away.  Works good for me.

For what it's worth, the new '08 Bullet Classic (Iron Cylinder-last of the Mohicans) owner's manual calls for 15W-40 API SG for the clutch...  lighter than 50 on the heated end.  Don't know what the new Classic AVL clutch would call for.
