hi
can any-one actually tell me what the dealer does at the 300 mile/500klm service. is it just oil/filter change and a check-up and tighten of the nuts bolts etc.
or much more involved such as  the head re-torqued etc etc. all replies/views greatly appreciated

I took mine in a couple weeks ago.  The dealer did the oil change, checked the bolts, gave the bike a wipe down and wax.  I also had them check the right side pilot light that had stopped working (a loose connection).  I don't think they retorqued anything on the engine.

That's pretty much it. If you check your Owner's manual, there is a service check list. Ask the mechanic to go through the check-list. For my B5 manual, it's on pages 59-61. I'm assuming you're going to the Motociclo dealership, they should be knowing what to look for already, I hope.

if you do take it in make sure they know how!   when i took delivery of mine the tech that does the work on them went over it with me and he knew nothing of the suction filter for the oil!!  he said that was part of the shift mechanism.  (i was not being a know it all just checking. sense this is my first enfield)

he got out the book and i pointed it out and he still didnt seem to want to hear it!.  i just think of all those bikes running around that they serviced and running around with a plugged up suction filter!!!!!! (as mine was)    ;D

Without digging up the shop manual, it amounts to changing the oil, cleaning the suction filter (very important especially when the bike has it's first couple of services) ,oil filter, adjusting the chain (also important), looking things over  well and checking nuts and bolts. You do NOT need to retorque the heads.

What is the suction filter? I have got a G5 with just over 100 miles on it, first Royal Enfield, but there is no mention in the handbook or maintenance schedule of a suction filter. I am aware that there is an oil filter, a corrugated paper thing in a metal case, but as for the other thing, no idea unless you are referring to an air filter.

There is an oil sieve just beneath the oil drain plug, it´s cap is fastened with two 8mm nuts (that should be tightened very, very carefully). After the first and second oil change you´ll find some metal dust in the sieve, but also shreds of cloth and occasionally bigger metal scraps aswell. Surprisingly the bikes don´t seem to take offense, and and from the third oil change on you´ll only see a tiny amount of metal flour.

here's is a pic of mine     btw the bolts for it and oil filter housing are torque to 48inlbs and the drain plug (19mm) is 180inlbs or 15ftlbs better to use a torque wrench on the higher end of its scale. dont use a 400ftlbs wrench to torque 4 ftlbs (48inlbs)

thanks all..............great info here. one thing about this site. ask a question and the answers come in fast. bike booked next week so i know whats on .cars have been my passion for the past 40 years so the bike side is pretty new,
whats the thought on oil type/brands etc  following the first service.

for oil it specs/ SL or JASO-MA 15w50.   SL rating for cars i would not use if its the only rating it has.  car oils have become energy conserving which is good for mpg's but not wear. it lacks zinc and phosphorus which is a great anti wear additive.  motorcycle oils tend to have more of these additives which is needed for the transmission where great shear is seen.  also diesel oil has this as well. very great cylinder pressures and 100,000 plus rpm turbo shafts that see high egt's need this. rottela (shell 15w40 diesel oil actullay has the JASO-MA rating on it. (the MA i think means no friction modifiers)

that being said i use the castrol vtwin rs full synthetic 20w50 just 2 quarts is all thats needed and you should soak your oil filter in clean oil before install

good luck with your new bike they are really very easy and fun to work on.  (compared to modern bikes)
