hello all ,I'm in england and own a 92 bullet classic with chair but i am having a few issues with it its has really noisy tappets and i cant seem to get hold of a dummies guide to adjusting them a mate of mine did the head gasket for me but i got a feeling he screwed up the tappet adjustment the other thing is that the plug keeps coking up and the engine hunts and tick overs to high any info would be appreciated as rally season is coming  ( other than that it runs great)

Hey Donna,

Some tappet noise comes with the territory. I'm not sure how loud they were before you  had the head work done, but there's a reason that they sell Royal Enfield t-shirts with the slogan "Loud Valves Save Lives".

If you head is getting carbon fouled you could also have issues with a too rich carb and your timing could be out of whack.

Here's one link.  I wouldn't get too bent over the hot/cold deal, though.  Adjusting hot gives me starting problems.  A little looseness I can deal with.

the tappets noise is to loud ! i hear what you say about loud tappets save lives but i would like my ear drums not to bleed , Ive had a  new carb fitted (amal) do agree that it could be running rich but not sure if the values are good as well look reasonable when the top came off, as for the timing it has electronic ignition

Should hear them click a little, but shouldn't make your ears hurt, by any means.

If it sounds like somebody's firing an AK-47, they're too loose.  Should spin by hand, but not be lifted up and down at TDC.

Mine's a 10mm spanner on the lock nut.  Shouldn't take :05.

done all that coming to the conclusion that its the timing as the tappets were set at tdc if i get the timing sorted then move on to the tappets if needed and then adjust the card accordingly what do you recon  ? just a little nervous as havent had anything like this in years ridden japs for a long time

What color's that plug?

Optimum = Sand to Chocolate Brown.
Rich = Black eventually fouled.

plug is really coked up and black and sooty not wet though ,  the more i think about this the more i believe it needs retarding the only problem i have is that its got electronic ignition and Ive never worked with that before took the side of the dizzy today to be confronted with the guts of the ignition now i now (at least i think ) the advance and retard is behind this but cant see how to remove it any one got any ideas thanks!

It should be the same as if you had points but you are rotating the sensor rather than the points.

Rotating the plate in the direction that the distributor shaft moves (I believe that the shaft rotates counter clockwise) will retard the timing and of course rotating it the opposite direction will retard the timing.
