While waiting for the light to change (in neutral) suddenly the engine starts to race. I had been riding awhile so the engine was hot, choke off and idle air screw set just right. Immediately shut down and pulled over. Me and my buddy start checking the obvious stuff ( no stuck throttle, no air leeks around carb ). Start it up each time after a check and no luck. About the time I'm wondering how to get home (newbie panic) my friend flips open the gas tank filler and voila' down goes the idle back to normal. He's on a BMW K1100 and I had to listen to his #@*& (shoulda got a Triumph etc.) all the way home. >:(    Chuck.

Could be the tank got warm, the air in the tank and the gas in the tank both expanded, pushing gas down into the carb... which if correct would mean your gas cap bleed valve is gummed up...

I think Geoff has got it right!
Find your tank filler cap vent hole as it must be blocked/obscured somehow!!!!
If it ain't broke-------------------------- fix it 'till it is!
