My 1400 mile C5 idles (tickover) quite high which means selecting 1st gear results in a 'clunk' How easy and how can I reduce idle speed?

If you haven't swapped the Bosch plug for the NGK, that will help keep the idle at a more constant rpm.  The idle adjustment is pretty easy and was what my C5 needed about the same miles as yours.

Also, fan the clutch a few times before you put it in first gear for the first time after starting.  The plates get sticky when the bike sits, this helps them dislodge.
