Wanting a magnetic drainplug for my W650, I went along to Ebay to have a look. Plenty of el-cheapo stuff available. Then I started thinking about the Rare Earth magnets I use in my workshop - these tiny neodymium magnets will hold a gigantic wrench, even a hammer, to a metal machine cover!  So I did a bit of research and found this place.
Not all magnetic drainplugs are created equal it seems.

I stuck a rare-earth magnet on each of my drain plugs and have picked up a shard or two, though only from the transmission.  The Curie temperature for common rare-earth magnets is WELL above 72-degrees C, so whatever you have around will work fine. 

I stuck mine on the outside of the plugs and they are still there after 8,000 miles.
