The old Amal 389/16 Monobloc carb has a sliding block that mounts inside the throttle slide. Two cables connect to the top of the carb. One for throttle and one for  the air valve. Check out the Burlen fuel systems site and click on the 389 1 1/8" Monobloc carb then click to order parts and it will give you a break down.

If there's no choke attachment on the top of the carb it might be an MK1 carb I've got two of them in my hand right now. No choke on either. The Mk1 has a the float bowl that is on the bottom , the Mono that Rotor mentioned the float bowl is on sideways. With three screws holding the bowl cover on.  ERC

Ive got the sideways floatbowl..looks just like a Mono...but there is a blank at the top of the carby where the choke cable would go in.

Now granted..Ive not tried starting this in under 40F weather..but its started every time I kicked it over before tear down.

Thanks!

That means you could if you had to buy the parts or take them off a junk one to make it into a choke model.  ERC

If you have the circular shaped side load bowl then it should be a Monobloc. The concentric types were common replacements in the later 60s & 70s since they were all that was available new. The Monoblocs were made in all sorts of configurations from single carb installation to twin carb and some twin carbs required narrower float bowls to fit close enough on some models of bikes. You may have one from a twin carb installation that the other mate had the air valve. It's just hard to say. If it works OK without the choke, you might as well use it the way itis until a better deal comes your way. As was mentioned before, it might just need the valve and a twin spigot top to convert it to air valve type but it depends on which innards it has. Some have the inner metering body parts that don't have provisions for an air valve so that part may also need to be replaced. The new carbs that are available from Burlen fuel systems are not cheep so a guy on a fixed budget might have to get by the best way possible for now. I see them on E-pay now and then but there is no way to now whether they might need a new slide or need to be sleeved due to wear. All options cost money so it's always a risk with used parts.

On my Monoblock

there is a bolt in the "choke hole" and a spring loaded clip that keeps the top of the carby from unscewing. It LOOKS to be factory...but..shrug

Picasa has a pretty decent zoom feature. Click on the magnifying glass and zoom in on any bits and pieces...

Looks to me you have enough access to stuff to just through away what you have and make a new bike.   ERC  ;D

Even with the zoom, I can't tell for certain what might be plugging the hole but the air valve cable goes through that clip the holds spring tension on the slide cover nut. It usually has a cable guide piece that fits in there then the outer cable cover fits into that. The air valve is a smaller part that fits inside the slide body. The throttle slide moves independent if the air/choke valve. If you need those parts you can get them from Hitchcocks or you can buy a whole 389 carb off of E-pay to get em but I think I would just get some new parts. Much safer that way.

I believe I mentioned that I repair machinery in machine shops and have some related hobbies. Though to be fair..most hobbies dont require a forklift...sigh....

Im seldom bored however...<G>..I can always find something to do.

I bought a new Amal 376 called the 1716 to replace the 376/40 on my 56 Indian Tomahawk.  I tried to find info and reviews on the net about these new carbs and could not find much, so just took the plunge.  I have purchased some parts from India and while the quality is variable, everything worked out well. I put a picture of the bike in the members rides section.  I am having trouble getting a seat like the original and gave up on the tool box.
