Hello all,

I'm about to purchase my first bike, and  have decided on a G5! The only dealer around me has a 2009 G5 in stock. Are there any differences in the 2009, 2010, 2011 models that should stop me from getting the 2009? Also, should I expect to get some mark down on the price given it's 2 years old (it still only has 50 miles on it)?

Thanks,
-n

Welcome to the forum.  :)

Assuming we are speaking of a bike in the U.S., the only word of caution about a 2009 UCE bike is to make sure the 3rd gear change was made to the transmission.
That was a DOT requirement and Royal Enfield sent some tech's plus the needed parts to the United States.  Supposedly  every one of them had the fix but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Also, I think the 2009 might still have the older style oil fill cap on it.
This old design did not have a screw to hold the oil filter retaining plate in position when the cap is removed to change the filter. The old style cap makes changing the filter a real PITA.
Ask the dealer if the new style "retained" filter cap is installed.
If it isn't, I think they can be bought for about $35 or for the cost of a screw, a drill and tap you can do the mod yourself.
The dealer might even be willing to throw in the new style cap just to help make the sale.

The dealer I bought my G5 from had a 2009, G5 available and as I recall he was asking $500 less than the original price for it just because it was 2 years old (with about 20 miles on the odometer).

Also, make sure it's the newer UCE engine.  I think there were still some AVLs available in 2009.  But I guess it wouldn't be a G5 if it wasn't UCE.  Just ask anyway ;)

Ah, thanks for the replys guys. I do believe it's got the UCE engine as the owner of the dealership and I talked about it quite a bit. He seemed to know his stuff. The dealer is Centaur Cycles in Santa Fe BTW. Anybody ever deal with them?

Their website shows an AVL equipped Bullet along with the UCE.

He should discount an '09 for more than a few hundred dollars.  Otherwise, get a new one.

Oh, one more thing.  The website states that Enfield gas mileage will be at least 75mpg.  That is not a true statement for the majority of US owners.

Carefully do your research on this dealer.  They might be fine, but be sure.

It states 85mpg but that's an English Imperial gallon, bigger than a US gallon.  Figure 65mpg or so in the US.

I don't think that figure is meant to be Imperial gallons.  I think it depends on how you drive and what speeds you're running at.  My brother and I went on a trip with him on his G5 and me on my iron barrel.  Traveling at iron barrel friendly speeds (ie mostly 45-55mph with occasional bursts of 60), I averaged in the low 70's for mpg and he got in the low to mid 80's.  This was, of course US gallons.  When he went on a trip with his friend (who rode a BMW F650), his mpg dropped to the mid 60's.  The difference was lots of faster acceleration and cruising speeds.  My car is the same way - if I drive conservatively, I get the advertised mpg.  If I use a heavy foot on the gas pedal, it drops noticeably.

I bought my B5 from Centaur Cycles in May.  They seem to me to be a stand up bunch.  But you may have to do some dealing to get a mark down on the price.

Hi nijusan!
G5 is good! You'll have great fun and be constantly grinning!
The 2009 is as good as the brand new ones. The two major differences are described above. In addition, RE changes some details within the series without mentioning anywhere. Don't be surprised if you recon different nuts, welding technics or wiring. You should See a RE as a hand Made toy. Have fun!

Welcome Nijusan:

Besides the two differences mentioned between 2009 and 2010(11) models (transmission had to rebuilt for 2009 models - ask dealer if it was done, and oil filter cap design), I believe the rear light is also different from rectangular to round in later models.

My personal preference would be the newer model. Whichever model or year you choose, you can't go wrong with any model - they all come with a Grin on the Face Certificate as long as they are running ;D !

I'd personally get a new B5. The kinks that were present in the new UCE engines have been worked out in the new one. It is a 1000 bux cheaper, has the original retro frame and a two year warranty. The 1000 or so bux that you save could be used towards gas, insurance, accessories, riding gear etc.

They had a B5 as well, but I like the styling of the G5 a little better. I thought they were only around $500 cheaper. I'm hoping I can get the 2009 G5 for around the same price as the B5.

Since the B5 is cheaper than the G5 because it uses an old frame I see no reason to buy a G5 other than color selection. Throw in the warranty, and what reason do you have to buy the G5?

You are correct, they are only 500 cheaper as advertised. They do have the kinks worked out of the engine. The style is a personal preference.
