I received a replacement tank for my C5 today.  The original that came on my 2009 (left) is rounder, particularly at the rear of the tank.  The new take is over 2” wider at the rear.  Is this tank off of a 2010 or 2011?  My 2009 seat doesn’t mesh well with new tank either.   I’m looking for some more info before I call back me dealer.

Wow !   The tank on the right is an identical stamping to the one on my '06 Military.

Of course the undesirable will be a bit different to accommodate the EFI but still.

I have a stock 2009 C5 and just double checked the tank. It has the larger one (on the right.) Weird. Did you buy the bike new or used? If used, maybe the original owner replaced the tank with the smaller one. If you bought it new, I am perplexed.

My 09 has the smaller tank on the left.
On the eighth day God created the C5, and it was better looking than anything on the planet.

I bought it new in Aug of 2009.  I have no idea how long the dealer had it on the showroom.  It had less than 2 miles on it .  I swapped both tanks on/off agin.  The original fits my legs much better when I grip it with my knees.  Better is a relative term,   maybe I could get used to the bow legged felling it gives me.   It just dosent feel like I'm sitting MY C5 any more.

Perhaps one is C5 and one is G5 ? or maybe a running change ?

while its hard to be 100 percent sure without removing mine, the tank on the right looks like my 2010 red C5. As r80rt said, the one on the left looks like his 09. Didnt know that there were differences but must be. Course, these are hand made! ;D

My C5 has a manufacture date of Jan 2010 and the tank looks like the one on the right.

I think I have read somewhere the Indians make changes any time they like, they don't care what time of year it is.

What is wrong with your old tank?

Mine is C5 Nov 09 (domestic)and I have the tank just like on the right. May be it was the first batch and as ICE said it's a running change.

Do you have the improved version of the tank with strengthened mounting bracket like in this picture?

This is fascinating.

C5 and G5 riding brethren, please comment on weather your Bullet is a C5 or G5, the build date and tank style.

Cheers in advance.

Except for the sensor and pump bungs, the underside of the new tank is the same as my '06 Iron Barrel.

Seems like you did not get the new updated version but 2nd generation tank.

I've got the wider tank on my 2010.  I'm guessing it's as already mentioned, change at the factory for one reason or another.  They do this all the time, it even mentions it in the warranty.

If you really  don't want the new wider tank you can try to get the old one brazed, coated and repainted.  I had to get my Ducati tank brazed, they're notorious for failing at the rear hinge mount.  Luckily on that one all the repair was done in non-visible areas and there was no need to repaint.

Would that be done at a welding shop or a dealer?  Who fixes gas tanks?

Jester, like Scotty said, that tank is very repairable. From working on old bikes, and modifying old tanks, I know......  See if you have a radiator shop in your area that does it. They will silver solder it, pressure test it, clean out the old tank liner, and apply a new , professional liner in it..... Not that tank cream crap, that gets brittle and cracks inside the tank. And it DOES look like its in a spot that would not be too noticeable, you maybe able to just do some touch up, if the guy with the torch is good.

The factory makes running changes. It is not a model year thing....after all that is the point. If you fix the tank  be sure to check and make sure that there is no pressure on the mounting tangs. You may need to shim them if the spacer isn't tight. These are handmade and anything can happen.

Very interesting observation about the difference in tanks. This is something we know nothing about. What I do know is that the factory has found a new manufacturer for C5 tanks. I will bet that the tank you got as a replacement is from the new company. There will not be ANY of the old tanks available. I am guessing here but I know my facts about a new manufacturer are correct.
Best Regards,

CMW Confirmed my original tank is no longer available.  All new tanks are the 'slightly' larger one.  Anyone want to trade???

Gorilla has it right, find a good radiator shop.  Look around, the first one I contacted said there was no way to do it without a complete repaint.  I found another location of the same chain that did it and kept the paint intact.  Did a really nice job too.

As he also said, they will braze/silver solder it and may coat it.  Their coating is much better than almost anything you can do yourself.
