Keeping an eye on the performance of these new UCE bikes, today my G5 2009 crossed 14,000 miles on the speedo.  Some of you guys who bought bikes not so long ago will be soon reaching 5 digit miles on your REs the way you ride  ;) !

Singh, congrats!

Did you do the 10k service with the new seals and plastic gear?

I came to a red light the other day and saw my clock (in km) read 12345.8  Wish I'd had a camera handy.

No 10K service.  It has original seal and plastic gear. While we are talking about this plastic gear - if that goes, there will be no oil to cool the engine leading to overheating and the transmission will have no oil circulation either - potential serious damage.

BUT before that stage is reached, will there be any hints or symptoms that the plastic gear is about to go kaput ? or it just stops running all of a sudden one day?

The plastic gear is pretty tough, the most important thing is the oil seal.

How was your bike's seal when you replaced it ? Did it look worn out or it looked good ?

The seal and gear looked fine,  it's cheap and easy to do, plus it makes me sleep better. I'm not going to take any unnecessary chances with my fine little motor ;)

The first symptom may be engine seizure at speed ;)  The kit's on sale right now through CMW.

Is this seal in the right side crank case behind the stator ? Guess need to remove the stator to remove it.

Also did you need special tool to remove rotor off the crank to access plastic gear ?

The rotor doesn't come off the crank for this, It's easy.
Drain the oil, disconnect the battery, remove vent hose, disconnect the wires from the alternator at the plug, loosten the foot peg and let it hang out of the way, G5 riders pull the kick arm off, remove the 11 bolts holding the side cover on, pull the cover off, the gear is super easy to change, just remove the C clip and slide it off the shaft. make sure you put the new gear in the right way.
The seal is in the side cover, remove the snap ring pop out the seal, pop in the new one and put it back together with new oil and filter. It might take 45 minutes.  I didn't even hurt the gasket so now I have a spare :D

Thanks for this detailed and clear description on how to replace the seal and plastic gear !  Seems like RE guys really tried their best to make this bike a rider DIY friendly ;D.

When you say 'put the new gear in the right way' - can you elaborate on that.  Are the two sides of plastic gear different ?

Yeah, they did a good job, it may be semi modern but it's still a simple one lunger!, I changed the gear during a oil change, didn't take a lot longer than normal

What is this 'right' way of plastic gear ?  Can you elaborate if the two sides of plastic gear are different ?

The gear will go on either way, but there is a boss on one side that faces out. Mark the gear on your bike with a sharpie before you remove it, then you can compare the new one and make sure the proper side is facing out. you'll need a snap ring tool but nothing more exotic than that. Any parts store should have the tool.
