If flat black will do you can get it  in a spray can at the local hardware store.

Because of the high temperatures on the muffler be sure to get the paint that is made for spraying BBQ's and wood burning stoves.

The Krylon paint I used on my BBQ and smoker is called "BBQ & STOVE" paint (fairly original don't you think?) and it can take a constant temperature of 600 degrees F with short spikes to 1200 degrees F.

Heat wrap for the head pipe and muffler.

I've used that before on other bikes and it caused SIGNIFICANT rusting underneath.  I don't recommend it unless you take it off frequently for cleaning.

In the past we have had reasonable luck painting chrome if we etched it or roughed it up a bit with fine sandpaper first.

Supposedly using real ( made from bugs ) shellac as a primer coat works the best but I have not tried it.

Based on past experience I'm partial to KG coatings and will use their stuff when its time to black out the shiny bits on my Bullet and refinish the rest.

They are just one of several suppliers of coatings.

I didn't think chrome would sand well. What would etch it? Acid? Croming involves sulfuric. Nitric would be WAY too nasty. Or is the chrome from the factory soft enough for 220 or 440 paper.

If you use the "wet/dry"  black silicon carbide sandpaper there isn't too much that it won't sand.
Silicon carbide is almost as hard as diamonds.

for your exhaust you will want a ceramic (probubly spelled wrong) coating. for the other shiny bits rough it up with sand paper like said above and paint. you might even want to use bbq paint because it holds up to more heat. i used it on the heat shield on my klr 3 years ago and it is still holding up. the first few miles there was alot of paint smell.

I have BBQ paint on my KLR as well. It works but the KLR doesn't have chrome. I also put it on a chromed exhaust but that was a $300 bike. If I were doing an RE I would go ceramic or a high temp powder coat. They have all kinds of colors and finishes these days.

Maybe header wrap from the auto drag racing croud for the pipe. It comes in a bunch of colours.  Try Summit Racing in Ohio. I wrapped the headers and downspouts in my 78 Bronco in the stuff back in the 90's and it's still hanging in.

When its time to black out the exhaust I am going ceramic filled on the inside and GunKote on the outside.

My Enfield Dealer in Scottsdale has a website which shows how they modified a Military's exhaust.  Hopefully he won't mind if I give a link to the instructions.

I did a little research. sand( alot) then prime with self etch or zinc chromate. I've used the zinc before. Bonds insanely with good prep. The exhaust will wait till fall.
