do u mean the two little bulbs on the front that glow barely ? i think they are called pilot lights. i think it a carryover from the days of old in  merry old england where all the bikes had to have pilot ligths to legally be able to ride at night....they were actually a gas type filament that u light at dusk on the old machines to let all the pub patrons who were drunk with ale and various brews be able to see u.....sounds like a acceptable story...i'm sure somene knows the real story...
Oh Magoo you done it again

I heard similar but that they were needed to park at night.  Cars and bikes both needed them.  It fits with the fact they on cars they are called parking lights but in the days of yore A) bikes didn't have batteries and B) if they did they sure wouldn't last long with the lights on.  I like your story better Green, "running" lights.

At night mine give enough illumination to maneuver at idle in first gear wit the headlight off thus not disturbing the neighbors.

I put LEDs in mine, got fed up with replacing the crappy bulbs. They're much brighter, but I kind of liked that cosy glow they had before......

Last time someone asked me what those light do I told them the truth.

"What are those lights for?"

"Oh, those,  they burn out."

"I know that,  but why are they there?"

"I just told you, they burn out."

"Huh?"

"Exactly"

Mine are good for one thing.  I have LED's in them, and they are just bright enough for when I get home late and pull up to a stop at the garage door.  I can kill the motor and headlight, still see the lock to open the garage door,  and walk in to turn on the lights.    The LED's I put in are actually surprisingly bright.  Beyond that, they just look kind of neat.

In the US you can't use blue lights on any vehicle except police vehicles.
A guy I work with has a Guzzi Police Special and got a ticket for having blue lenses on the front turn signals. He rides it now with crown royal bags over the turn signals and the flashing light pod thing in the back.
You don't want red in the front either.

I think the rule (and it can vary by locality) is no blue lights visible from 200 feet.  So the tiny little blue dot tailights are legal because you can't see the blue from far away.  That said, I avoid all green, blue, and forward facing red lights.  These are emergency vehicle colors and even if they're technically legal, who wants to antagonize the po-po?  They've got enough to contend with, they don't need me and my silly lights. ;)

Had a blue dot tail light on a hog. Not even visible in daylight but it earned me a fix-it ticket anyway. it was a $10 "administrative fee" 20 years ago. Not sure what it would be now. Amber LEDs in my "nipples".

It varies from State to State. I ''vie seen tow trucks with blue flashers, and Cop cars with only red, fire trucks with blue lights, and some cops with all colors....blue, red, yellow and white flashing lights.

Some states will write you a ticket if your Ford Crown Victoria "looks" too much like a cop car.

If also seen volunteer fire fighters used blue, or red and yellow in their cars.

Ain't that the truth!  I bought the blue lenses and I also got clear and then semi-clear.  Eitherway you can't see them.  And since I have yet to replace the burnt out bulb I only have 1 blue nipple.  ??? :-\
