So the tappet cover on a friend's '09 AVL Classic has developed a neat little crack running from the acorn nut down to the bottom edge (which we discovered after trying to solve that leak with a new gasket). For an interim fix, we're either going to JB-Weld the crack neatly, or epoxy an inner-tube gasket to the inner face of the cover to prevent oil from reaching the crack.

As a more permanent fix, of course, he's looking to replace the tappet cover. He spotted one at bulletwala, but the part number doesn't match what he'd found in his looking around. Does anyone know if the AVL 350 tappet cover is physically the same as the 500's cover, just with a different part number?

I would just JB Weld it and stop over-tightening it.  There is almost zero pressure from the inside and no reason to make it really tight.  It'a just there to keep dirt out and oil in- oil that barely gets up there.

Bulletwalla pictures are usually pretty good at diplaying multiple pictures with measurements given.

Thanks guys! I was pretty confident that the tappet covers between the 350 and 500 would be the same (in fact, aren't the crankcase castings the same?).

Uncle-E, I think that's what we'll do. It's not really a critical component, the only critical bit is that it shouldn't leak.

And the use of some chrome exhaust paint should pretty well hide the repair if done properly.

Okay, now I'll admit I did the same thing during a recent valve adjustment. It really wasn't THAT tight, so I guess it doesn't take much. My replacement (polished) is on it's way from CMW.
