I do dearly love the mod section of the photo gallery, but what about if we each posted our most recent (or favorite) mod with a description. It would be nice if discussion was kept to a minimum, and each post had only one mod in it.

This could be something like a "showoff" thread, where no matter the quality or usefulness of the mod, it shows the creativity of RE owners. It could be a thread that you could link to outside areas and people new to RE could see what we do to our bikes.

I think each post should have a picture, and limiting one mod per post keeps things compartmentalized. Even if there are consecutive posts by the same person, if each post (and picture) is limited to one subject it could make for a fun thread.

And hey, if this is a bad idea or it quietly dies, at least I'll have tried.

I start the thread off with a fairly simple (if cheesy) mod I did the other day, putting a rain shield on my air filter. I used an Almond Roca can with the bottom cut out, fits nicely around my air filter and keeps crap out until I pony up the $40 for a proper one. Doesn't look the best but eh, whaddya do. The JB weld looks fugly but a nice coating of black RTV around the whole rubber assembly that I did today makes it look a bit better.

Well- that's interesting. Couldn't do that on an AVL, though... Too bad.

My most recent was this Deluxe tank I found for $25. I re-lined it with Red-Kote and put the knee pads on. Oh- I also added the "Royal".

Here is a simple way to improve oil/tappet casing cooling.

It always bugged me that my Classic 500 has a finned, alloy tappet inspection cover... which is backed by a full area, 2mm thick gasket. This wrecks thermal transfer, so those nice fins are going to waste. This is a shame because the oil splashing around in the tappet casing is straight off the cylinder head and is at max. temperature.

So, I made myself an oversize solid copper gasket from some 14 swg (2mm) sheet obtained from ebay (just over 6 GBP delivered). Now at least some of my returned oil is bouncing off several square inches of solid copper and the heat captured can go out through its overhangs, and the finned cover, into the slip stream.

NB., copper is about 50 percent better at heat transfer than aluminium, which is why I went for a big ugly oversized gasket. There is no trace of any oil leak so far but I have only done 10 miles with the mod in place.

My potato/roast/fish oil temp mod... done just before the winter set in!

Requirements:

1. Wife's cooking thermometer
2. Drill and JB Weld
3. Hiding place from wife.

Currently i'm repainting the tank and changing out the bars for some drag style ones.....

Oh, it IS an AVL. I found the K&N filter at a local Autozone for a lawnmower or something, fit nicely.

For content, this is the plug I'm using for my starter motor hole. Quite sturdy and you can paint it black to keep it somewhat hidden if you want. Two pieces of plastic squishing a rubber ring for sealing.

Well, once in a while I go on rides where a couple of the old harleys and Indians have these railings and bumpers. I got to staring at a runner on an old Electro Lux vacuum cleaner... and trembled.
I resisted as long as I could- honest. It's reminiscent of a ghost pedestrian slicer.
It's a hand hold when I fall.
It's nothing.

Cheap and easy. Pannier lock keeper chains. Total cost less than three bucks IIRC.

Have you had much gremlin trouble since installing said bell?

Uncle E, I love your chromed tank too... was thinking of replacing my dented stock blue with a chromey one further down the road. Are your forks chrome too, or just the stock gray in bring sunlight?

Didn't like the chrome look of my headlight trim and visor (headlight trim is actually nickel plated, so looks a bit more "yellow" than the visor) so I sanded them with some 180 to achieve a "brushed aluminum" look. Also drilled and added a jewel to the headlight visor.

I want to do this to mine as well...there is not really a jewel on my old honda but more of a indicator on top so you can tell if the headlight is on or not. It came that way.

The jewel I added to mine also shines through - tests indoors confirm that it actually works.

Here's a pic - I've brushed the aluminum surround to my speedometer, and the control bars.

You'll also notice that I made a round cap fit on the normal fliptop cap place, without buying a conversion kit. I simply cut some threads in the gas cap bung with a dremel, and modded a stock Harley gas cap ($10 on eBay) to thread in. There's also retro-reflective 3M tape around the headlight, anything to increase visibility.

Guess this also counts as a mod; just ordered a new rear tire for my bike as the Avon on there harks from 2004 and was already cracked when I bought the bike in 2009.

It's an 80 road 20 dirt tire, and I live in the PNW so you could classify the roads as 20% dirt if you wanted to

And to keep with my own rules, PICS of other mods I've done. Modded a stock Harley Sportster '59-'82 gascap to fit on the normally fliptop tank by cutting ridges in the stock bung (pics are before sanding/etc so they look rough), and a pic of my key when I was taking the MSF course - bike 107, or LOl upside-down

Got my drag bars on yesterday.... REALLY like the riding position. Lower than stock but not as low as flipped stock bars.
